Turntable Terrorists: TR NCH aka Dave Twomey

By Matt Lyne | Tuesday, Dec 1, 2009

TR NCH aka Dave Twomey

UK-born Dave Twomey has been based in Tokyo for over seven years and has held residencies at Tokyo clubs Yellow, Air and Womb. More recently, Twomey has started a new project called "TR NCH", both the new DJ alias and his production moniker focusing on the deeper side of his love of electronic music. Pushing and pulling the dubby, 4am, bass-heavy, spacey, trippy warehouse-beginnings and influences of Berlin, Detroit and Manchester towards one persona, both through TR NCH and Twomey's own event - "Mariana Dub Sessions" - he explores techno from its inception in the late 80s through the present and into the future. He's inspired by artists like Basic Channel, Donato Dozzy, Deepchord, and venues such as Berghain in Berlin (Resident Advisor's Best Club 2009).

Dave Twomey has been a big name in the Japan techno scene for a while, being one of only two non-Japanese DJs to make it into Loud Magazine's annual top 50 DJs chart, but I principally chose him for the dynamic approach of the TR NCH project and for being one of very few Japan-based DJs (besides myself) who is championing the output of excellent Manchester-based dub-techno label Modern Love. Twomey's ambition of giving the sounds of leading-edge artists such as Claro Intelecto and Andy Stott the airing they deserve in Japan is certainly nothing to be sniffed at, and makes Twomey with his TR NCH DJ project something of an exemplar. As well as being on the forefront of the dub-techno scene, TR NCH's DJ sets are sometimes ephemeral and other times just plain gritty, though always piping a joyously cerebral sound you will not hear anywhere else nearby.

The Mariana Dub Sessions also produce podcasts - available at marianadubsessions.podomatic.com, if you're interested in checking out the event's sounds - which have received praise from the likes of MLZ (Modern Love) and Peter Van Hoesen (Time To Express), who has also worked on remixing early TR NCH works. Watch out for TR NCH releases coming in the near future and future Mariana Dub Session events.
