DJ TUTTLE (aka Marginalman) has long been one of my favorite DJs in the country. When I first saw him play at an event in Zing in Osaka, I remember thinking at the time how good a techno DJ he was and how much he must know about the genre to play such an inspiring set. The second time I saw him play was at his own event - "Hobo", at Noon - with a guest performance by New York post-punk disco legends ESG. I was absolutely astonished by his faultless set of obscure post-punk and mutant disco. At that particular time, I was obsessed with those genres and and was spending all my time "researching" them, yet I didn't know a single track he played... though every single one was amazing. And then I realized this was the same guy I had seen play at Zing.

TUTTLE is a man of phenomenal music knowledge, coupled with impeccable taste and first-grade turntable technique. He is truly versatile, in that whatever kind of party he is playing at, he rolls out a consummate exposé of the event's genre, to the delight of music-geeks and party-freaks alike. Starting out in the late 80s playing punk, new wave, noise and Chicago and acid house, TUTTLE has over the interceding 20 years of his career branched out even further from his original roots to encompass almost everything from Clone records-esque classic electro to hip-hop and bhangra beat whilst sticking to a 100% analogue manifesto.

Currently he runs and spins at the definitive dubstep/grime event outside Tokyo - "Dubstep Rude" (past guests include Skream, Benga, Appleblim, and Scuba) - and the unrivaled classic electro and no-wave event "Hobo" (with past guests including legends such as Liquid Liquid, ESG, and DMX Krew). As well as releasing music and mixes on labels like Romz, TUTTLE has also had a lucrative gaiden career making music for Japanese videogames. At the end of 2008, to further spread his vast passion for music, he opened a select-record shop called Marginal Records in Horie, Osaka.

Regardless of event genre or party venue, if you see DJ TUTTLE or his alias Marginalman on the line-up, make sure you're there.
