Conbini Crimes: Asahi Chocolat Cocktail
By Manuel Gere
I suppose it must be the season, the imminence of Valentine's Day, that is responsible for the appearance of choco-alcoholic bevvies in the conbini of late. First there was the disappointingly dull Chocolat Brewery chocolate beer from Sapporo and Royce. Now there's this Chocolat Cocktail thing from Asahi.
For ¥200 you get 270ml of chocolate milkshake and rum, with a free pre-puke sensation of queasiness as an unwritten part of the bargain. Yeah, thanks for that.
Curiously, the alcohol content of the Chocolat Cocktail (Won't someone explain that "Chocolat" is missing an "e" and that, no, Asahi/Sapporo can't get out of it by saying they're adopting the French spelling because they're both pairing it with another English word!) is just 4%...
By my non-scientific calculations, that means each can contains about 5ml of actual rum. Oh and watch out: you can't even tell that 5ml's there unless you vigorously shake the can before drinking. Granted, there's a warning printed on the can telling you to do exactly that, but, well, I didn't see it first time round and so I ended up drinking through a catastrophically large oil slick before I could finally get a taste of the sea. As it were.
The good news is that "Chocolat Cocktail" is a January-and-February-exclusive, so we can all wish it good riddance as soon as March arrives. Cheers to that!
