Club of the Month: Volleyball in Nagoya
By Adam Miller
Perhaps the most dreaded question in the English language is, "What do you wanna do today?" And the most vulgar response is "Dunno", or - even worse - "Nothing". Well, my lazy comrades, fear no more, as Japanzine has asked me to tell you how you could be spending your free time. I will be trying my best to unearth some of the clubs you could join in order to get fit, make friends or simply tear yourself away from your Xbox... Am I the only one with that problem?
First on the list is a volleyball club set up in the Kawana area (right next door to Gokiso). Meetings take place at least once a month and competitive matches are held on Sundays, with a ¥400 entry charge to cover the cost of renting the hall. Players are a mix of Japanese and foreigners, and with over 50 people already on the membership list you're guaranteed a decent crowd come match day.
At the moment there is no regular location for the matches, so the club is basically a roaming band of athletes, but no matter where the games are held, there is always a quick bite to eat afterwards where you can talk about the game and exchange info about Nagoya (perhaps far more useful than that ridiculous Budget Roulette page).
The founder of the club, Chris Ziffo, is looking for new members to join up and is keen to state that anyone is welcome, regardless of gender, Japanese/English level or proficiency at volleyball. This is a very friendly and welcoming club. If you're interested in singing up, check out the club's website at: sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/nagoyavolleyball
